About Us

The community centre is housed in the former Central Illawarra Municipal Council Chambers, opened in 1901. This operated until the merging of the North Illawarra and Central Illawarra chambers to create the City of Greater Wollongong in 1947. The building is owned by the Wollongong City Council. The Unanderra Branch Library opened in 1955 within the centre.

It is a double storey brick building with a parapet that held the Projection gear and a corrugated metal roof. The City of Wollongong Heritage Study Data Sheets: Volume 3/5 (1991) assigns the building local historical significance.

The building started its life as the local Cinema Picture Theatre and is a wonderful example of this style of early architecture, many locals have told us stories, with fond memories of the back row of seats at the Saturday flicks. The right side of the building [now the Library] was the original Wollongong Council Chambers.

The Unanderra Community Centre provides community strengthening programs, recreational/social support groups and activities for families, youth, individuals and seniors.

This local hub of community information and activities is a 'place-based' Centre of 'Unanderra Figtree Area Residents Association' (UFARA) which is an organisation governed by a community-based voluntary management committee. A Community Development Co-ordinator manages the Centre facilities, programmes and activities and a Youth Worker co-ordinates the Youth Project and these projects are supported by a team of volunteers.

Unanderra has several local attractions, an old school building in the Woolworth's carpark, several historic houses, the community centre mural depicting the suburb's history and it is the beginning of the branch off the Unanderra - Moss Vale railway line.

The centre provides a variety of activities and services to the residents of the surrounding suburbs of Unanderra, Figtree, Mount Kembla, Coachwood Park, Cordeaux Heights and Farmborough Heights.

Unanderra Community Centre is a dynamic, driving force in the local community, supporting residents in many areas.
